Are you thinking of leaving the U.S.? Are you worried about having to leave? Then let’s talk about why an investment account for immigrants matters right now. We get this question a lot in our community. So we want to break it down for you.
There are several things to think about. It’s a personal decision. But first, we want to acknowledge how much uncertainty there is. This is such a scary time for so many people. With all of the fear, it can feel really difficult to think long term.
Don’t Make a Non-Decision
You don’t want to make a decision you will regret later. Or rather, you don’t want to make a non-decision. Don’t avoid a decision on something that could really help you in the future.
For a lot of people, that non-decision looks like never opening an investment account. They worry they will have to leave. Or they plan to leave, but they don’t know when.
That might never happen. A lot of people think about leaving. It doesn’t mean they actually leave. But if you put off an investment account for immigrants now you could lose that chance for good.
So even as you hold all those emotions, keep two strategy considerations in mind.
1. You Can’t Open a U.S. Investment Account Once You Leave
You need an address in the U.S. to open an investment account here. You need to live in the U.S.
Let’s say you always wanted to invest in the U.S. stock market. It was a priority for you. But it never happened, and then you left the country.
You will have missed your chance. You won’t be able to open the account from another country. In very rare situations it might work, but it’s really, really difficult.
That’s the biggest reason to open an investment account for immigrants while you still live here.
2. You Could Miss Out on Money That Keeps Growing
Here’s the second consideration. Someone who lives in the U.S. can open an investment account here. Later, they can go live in another country for a while. Their investments in the U.S. can potentially keep growing.
Every situation is individual. So talk to a financial professional as you plan.
But even if you do leave, your account might keep growing and making money. That money can support you later in life. You might use it for retirement. You might use it when you return to the U.S. Or it simply keeps your options open. Who knows?
Focus on What You Can Control
Leaving, or worrying about having to leave, feels overwhelming. You would uproot your whole life. That makes it hard to take action, and we see that with a lot of people.
But we also see many of our students make a different choice. They tell us:
“There’s a lot of uncertainty, and I can’t control all that. What I can control is the decisions I make for me and my family. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow or 10 years from now. But I know I want money that works for me and grows while I sleep. So I’m going to open that account now. I don’t want to lose the opportunity if I leave the country.”
That’s the power of an investment account for immigrants. It keeps your options open, no matter what comes next.
