US Immigration News Updates on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
First up, as of August 2023, the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program remains pending. This is because there is a case on DACA pending before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
The original DACA program has offered protection for thousands of undocumented immigrants who arrived in the US as children. This program has enabled DACA recipients to pursue their dreams and contribute to society through providing access to work permits.
Under current court orders, the government is not processing first-time DACA applications. However, existing DACA approvals remain in place and the government is renewing DACA status for individuals who already obtained DACA.
No matter what happens at the district court level, the legality of the DACA program is likely to go back up on appeal.
The Border
Lastly, let’s discuss the current border situation. Policies that kept the border shut during the pandemic under the Trump Administration, referred to as Title 42 restrictions, lifted when the Biden administration declared the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) to end on May 11, 2023.
While the current Biden administration claims to be taking a proactive approach to address the challenges at the border, it has actually issued harmful policies that ban asylum and put people’s lives in danger. The focus has been more on border management and security measures than prioritizing the safety and well-being of those seeking refuge.
